Recommended tools and books
What we actually use and recommend. Links marked "sponsored" pay a commission to QARepo if you sign up or buy — see the affiliate disclosure for details. Links without a sponsored marker are recommendations we don't earn from; they're here because they're the right tool in the category. Prices and commissions do not affect what appears on this page.
Learn the fundamentals
Reskilling into modern QA or SDET work in 2026 mostly means picking up Playwright, TDD, contract testing, and the mental model around deployment pipelines. Below are courses and books we recommend for each. Some are affiliate links (Amazon Associates); we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.
- Udemy — Broadest QA course catalog, from beginner Playwright to advanced automation architecture. Best for hands-on learners who want to buy one course and go.
- Codecademy — Interactive learning environment. Strongest for engineers new to programming who need to build the language basics before layering on test tooling.
- Coursera — University-and-partner-taught certificates. Google's IT Automation with Python and similar tracks are the practical picks for a QA-adjacent portfolio.
- Continuous Delivery — Humble & Farley — Humble and Farley's book is still the clearest treatment of automated verification, deployment pipelines, and what "done" actually means. The book to read first if you're repositioning as a spec-and-contract specialist.
- Test-Driven Development: By Example — Kent Beck — Kent Beck's short, hands-on walkthrough of test-driven development. Reads in a weekend; the pattern sticks for a career.
- How Google Tests Software — Whittaker's account of how Google structures its test organization at scale. Older but the roles, ratios, and philosophy still show up in modern SDET job descriptions.
Cross-browser and device testing (recommendations, unpaid)
Both platforms below are the right tools in their category. Their affiliate programs closed in 2025-2026 (LambdaTest deprecated theirs with the January 2026 TestMu AI rebrand; BrowserStack moved to channel-partner and product-credit referral). QARepo recommends them on merit and does not earn from these links.
- LambdaTest — Real-device cloud, native integrations with Playwright, Cypress, and Selenium, and competitive parallel-grid pricing at team scale. Strong default for a new team picking a cross-browser platform in 2026.
- BrowserStack — The industry incumbent. Deepest device breadth and strongest enterprise integrations. Best fit when you need Safari-on-real-iOS at scale or a first-class device-lab story.
Test case and defect management (recommendation, unpaid)
TestRail is the right tool in its category. Idera moved their partnership program to channel/reseller in 2025, so this is a merit recommendation without commission.
- TestRail — Long-standing category leader. Deep integrations with Jira, Jenkins, GitHub. Best fit for teams tracking manual and automated runs in one place.
